Though Lumega-Z was created with the AMD epidemic in mind, its ingredients are thought to be beneficial for other types of eye disease (i.e., cataract formation and glaucoma). Many experts believe these same ingredients may have a wide range of other positive effects on the body.
Lumega-Z is an advanced scientific and research validated medical food for the replenishment and restoration of the Macular Protective Pigment.
Lumega-Z is a specially formulated and processed product containing adequate amounts of the three carotenoids that make up the macular protective pigment – Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-Zeaxanthin for the partial feeding of a patient by means of oral intake. Meso-Zeaxanthin, the most important of these carotenoids does not occur naturally in foodstuffs and therefore must be ingested via a specially processed product.
Qualifying as a medical food validates the impeccable quality control of micronutrients and ensures the formula is precisely tailored to treat or manage a specific disease or condition. Medical foods must be recommended and administered under the supervision of a physician or professional healthcare provider, once deemed necessary after medical evaluation.
Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, incorporated the definition of medical foods contained in the Orphan Drugs Amendments of 1988 into Section 403(q)(5)(A)(iv) of the FDCA.
Lumega-Z was developed by a team of internationally acclaimed scientists who have studied the Macula for over 30 years.
Painstaking research, precise formulation, and attention to patient convenience are the foundations of Lumega-Z. Besides all of the essential micronutrients and critical carotenoids, the formula contains meso-zeaxanthin, the most powerful of these carotenoids found in the macula.
Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-zeaxanthin
The MPP (Macular Protective Pigment), which is the yellow layer known as the macula lutea (yellow spot)
is comprised of the three carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Humans cannot manufacture these carotenoids, therefore they must be consumed in order to enter the bloodstream and transported to the macula. The average Western diet contains fewer than three mg of lutein and zeaxanthin per day. However, approximately 20 mg of the three critical carotenoids per day (equivalent to a bucket of green leafy vegetables) are needed to effectively restore and replenish the macular protective pigment.
Unlike lutein and zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin is not found in the diet. It is converted from lutein internally in the macula. Meso-zeaxanthin is concentrated in the foveal epicenter of the macula and is responsible for central and sharp vision, making it an essential nutrient in an effective medical food.
When meso-zeaxanthin is taken in conjunction with lutein and zeaxanthin, it has been proven to replenish and restore the macular protective pigment. Patients with macular degeneration have been shown to have 30% less meso-zeaxanthin in their macula compared to healthy eyes.
Dr. Richard Bone and Dr. John Landrum, principal members of the GHS Science Advisory Board, uncovered the roles and interactions between lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. With other researchers, they identified the biologic mechanisms responsible for the protective role of lutein and zeaxanthin in the eye and devised a way to measure the protective pigment in the macula.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are well known for their benefits for the heart, joints, brain and mood health, but omega-3s also play a role in vision support. A study published in the July 2006 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology reported that fish consumption and dietary omega-3 fatty acid intake reduces the risk of AMD.
There are several important published studies relating to omega 3 fatty acids and eye health. According to the article (citations are available on request):
- Regular intake of omega-3 fatty acids may have a prophylactic effect on two other common eye diseases leading to blindness, glaucoma and cataracts.
- Strong evidence also suggests that the long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) has the potential to aid in eye health. This is because DHA represents about 97% of all omega-3 fatty acids in the brain and 93% of all omega-3 fatty acids in the retina.
- Research conducted at the University of Bristol, U.K., and the University of Texas both showed that having an adequate supply of DHA was important in the development of good infant eyesight.
Lumega-Z was formulated to meet the growing demand for good ocular health across all age groups. This includes those who have reached an age where eye problems become more common, as well as the younger generation who suffer from eye fatigue due to increased use of computers, cell phones and tablet screens.
Superior Efficiency of Absorption, Safety and Convenience
Because Lumega-Z is a micronized lipid based liquid formula using proprietary MMP (Molecular Micronization Process) technology, its efficiency of absorption (EOA) is over 90%, compared to 30% EOA for pills. As a lipid-based liquid, Lumega-Z is easier to swallow, digest, and metabolize. It is packaged in 4x 5.25oz. bottles, each sealed to preserve biologic activity and prevent oxidation. Each bottle contains a 1 week supply (7 doses) of Lumega-Z concentrate and there is a measuring cup to measure out the daily dose of 0.75 FL. OZ. (1.5 Tbls). Each dose contains the full potency of ingredients. The bottles should be refrigerated after opening.
Safer and More Effective
Lumega-Z’s proprietary formula is significantly more safe and effective due to elimination of ingredients that are not biocompatible or may have adverse or competitive effects when used in combination. Lumega-Z contains no artificial colors and it is also sugar, gluten and dairy free.
Developed to Replenish and Restore the Macular Protective Pigment
Lumega-Z is the most comprehensive medical food for those who currently have a depleted macular pigment and for those who are at risk. Lumega-Z is also comprised of a full spectrum of micronutrients including vision-specific antioxidants, which help defend against damaging free radicals in the eyes and throughout the body.
